The chairmanship of the Competition Council (CC) will be entrusted to the current Head of the Cartel Department, Ieva Šmite. The Acting Chairwoman will perform the duties until a new Chairman is appointed, who will be approved by the Cabinet of Ministers in a competitive procedure.

I. Šmite has been working in the CC for 17 years, demonstrating her leadership skills and high stress resilience investigating the most serious violations of Competition law – prohibited agreements. 

Five representatives of the Council – Acting Chairperson I.Šmite and Council members Kārlis Piģēns, Deniss Ščeulovs, Inese Druviete and Ēriks Kristiāns Selga – will continue the work of the CC Council (the institution's decision-making body).

I. Šmite holds a Master of Law degree and has previous work experience at the State Probation Service and the Ogre District Court.


On 7 January this year, the Cabinet of Ministers adopted a decision to relieve Juris Gaiķis of his duties as Chairman of the CC. Juris Gaiķis will now chair the Latvian Digital Health Centre.
